Does anyone have any experience with the trencherman backhoe? Renting....using....or buying? It is sold by Northern Tool and made in the USA. I can have it delivered to my door for about $4800.00 Any input?

Mark, from the two that I've seen, one an early model and the other a Trencherman II, you aren't getting very much. The early model lacked power, the newer has a habit of pulling itself into the excavation. My friend had to hitch it back onto his 8yd dump and set the parking brake to cure the problem. Also, they can't reach over the rail of a pickup truck, let alone a dump truck, so he had to shovel the spoil into his truck by hand. They are limited, both were sold within a year. ....

Run, run like the wind from that piece of equipment. I will not badmouth Northern, I have a few things at home from them myself, but when it comes to complex machinery, let the buyer beware! ....

I will be happy to engage the role of badmouthing Northern Tool. They service a needed market but with high prices, poor quality, and inferior customer service. They attempt to offer equipment and implements to compete with major brands, but the quality is -2x while the price is -.2x.
Maybe there's a deal in those stores somewhere, but I'll find what I need from elsewhere.

Well, that makes sense. A 1300-pound machine on wheels that can generate 4000 pounds of force at the bucket? I guess it would have to fall into it own hole.
Remember the bionic man on TV years ago? He had the same problem. They would show him pulling large helicopters out of the air with his bionic arm; only his feet were flat on the ground and not anchored or hooked to anything.
The same people must have designed the Trencherman. When I went back and looked closely at the photos I also noticed the operator appears to be a child in a hard hat. So the machine is probably smaller than it appears. Guess I will find another system. Thanks guys. Now if that guy with the discount Kelley backhoes would only return my E-mails……

I built my own trencher very similar to one of these using Cadplans for about half the price.
The 728 model has nearly the same specs as the trenchman.
My cadplans digger works better than you might think.
The biggest problem is moving it from one spot to another. ....
